Following on from my research into Gustav Doré, I decided to do some environment thumbnails to practice composition. I kept the studies black and white to work with tonal values better.



Even through these 12 I can see real progression in my work. 

My three favourites are these:




I like these two because they appear to contain man made structures - something that I hope will play a role in my environment art.


I put the bottom one last as I actually referenced one of Dore's engravings in the composition:


By having the darkest part of the painting in the mid-zone, not the foreground. I think it adds a LOT of depth, and the thumbnail contains the most promise out of all of the others.
