Following on from my gradient research, I applied two very different colours to one of Dore's engravings to see what the result would be, and if the mood changed at all:

The red one feels hot and heavy to look at. I just feel that it is too stereotypical to have fire in hell - hence why I did a blue one - The feeling is certainly colder, and the mood is a lot more mysterious. I do feel myself drawn more to the red/yellow version though, because the light cast on the faces of Dante and Virgil make them seem like they are actually looking down in to the firey pit of hell (which they are) rather than looking down into a spaceship hatch - although this might be interesting to explore alongside my futuristic setting.

I also love Dante and Virgil's cloaks in this, it makes them seem almost shielded.
